I am a Professor at the Instituto de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades in the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico, where I teach in the graduate school of Sociology. I have been here since 1993. Before that I was a lecturer in Politics at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
My main interest is revolutionary hope. Is there any way of going beyond the monstrous, self-destructive capitalist system in which we live? What can we learn from and how can we strengthen the most exciting anti-capitalist movements of today, like the Zapatistas, the Kurdish movement and Abahlali, and the many less visible but ubiquitous movements of resistance and rebellion? How do we think of our work in the universities as part of the same rebellion?
Together with colleagues and students and other friends, we are creating a Centre for Anti-capitalist Critical Theory, with the aim of carrying these questions forward, making paths that can only be made by walking and asking.
